Having presented the highly acclaimed ‘The Woolgatherer’ in 2013 and the much talked about ‘Breathless’ in 2014, Orion are now back with this funny, fast-moving endlessly profane play which premiered on Broadway in 2011 and was nominated for 6 Tony awards.
About this play.
Struggles with addiction, friendship, love and the challenges of adulthood are at the center of the story.
Set in New York, the play is a funny fast-paced foul-mouthed story about feuding childhood sweethearts. Newly released from prison and struggling to remain sober, Jackie tries desperately to return to the straight-and-narrow but is hindered by the coke-using, expletive-slinging love of his live, Veronica. Jackie leans on his addiction sponsor, the mellow-talking, stay positive Ralph D who tries to keep Jackie from blowing up. Ralph D is having his own challenges with his ‘in-recovery’, ball-busting wife Victoria who sees Ralph for the dog he really is. And then there’s Julio, Jackie’s loyal cousin, who prides himself on having dignity and decorum, he is steadfast and emotionally complicated and always has Jackie’s back.
What the Critics say:
(about past productions of The Motherfucker With The Hat)
“It’s tight, smart and splendidly well-made, a tough-minded, unromantically romantic comedy that keeps you laughing, then sends you home thinking.” – Wall Street Journal
“Guirgis, a brilliant comedic talent…also has an original and knowing take on class, particularly as it plays out among the bottom-of-the-barrel working-class poor, who are virtually invisible to the wealthier men and women around them. Guirgis’ characters are strivers who lack the language to ‘pass’ in a white-collar world; they’re frustrated by limitations that they’re only half aware of, and that frustration provides much of the painful hilarity in their dialogue, which piles miscommunication on top of misunderstanding.” – New Yorker
About Orion Productions.
Orion Productions was founded in 2013 by Irish Actress Sinead O’Riordan. In 2012 ORion Productions presented the remarkable Irish Premiere of The Woolgatherer by Emmy Award Winning author William Mastrosimone, where Sinead also played the leading female role. Hailed by the Sunday Times as “triumphant theatre” with “knockout performances“, this theatrical highlight had sold out performances and huge success in Dublin, Cork and Galway. The Sunday Times also said that the show was ‘one of those inspiring instances where small theatre rivals the big players in terms of quality and excitement.’
