Michael Robert Murphy is a Fulbright Scholar in residence at UCC this semester. A director and actor in film and theatre, Michael is head of the graduate filmmaking program at The University of Montana. His recent work explores the relationship between live performance, film reality, and memory. The first two phases of this exploration began playing the title role in Beckett’s Krapp’s Last Tape, then in the translation of that work into a film (be again 2010). The third phase moves into combining live performance and film, exploring the portal between waking and dreaming, present and past, and the limits of language in describing the experience of reality.

This new work in development, Sleepwalker, will be shown alongside the work of students from UCC also exploring “the invisible made visible.”

Michael is also performing Krapp’s Last Tape during his stay here–March 14, 15, 16 at the Granary Theatre, where he will also be showing and speaking about his work process at a Perforum, Wednesday, March 21st at 6:00

Cork Opera House is proud to present Let’s Talk About Sam this St Patrick’s Weekend – a unique celebration of the legacy of the great Irish artist Samuel Beckett, the Nobel Prizewinning author and probably the most influential literary figure of the 20th Century.

‘Words are all we have’ he said and this St Patrick’s weekend sees those words come to life with a series of events and performances celebrating the literary genius that was Samuel Beckett. The programme will feature the critically acclaimed Gare St Lazare Players, a Lewis Gluckman Gallery exhibition, Gaitkrash, Trace and James McCann along with some other special guests throughout the weekend.

This weekend offers the people of Cork and beyond the chance to enjoy the words of one of the world’s greatest Irishmen in a performance by one of the world’s leading Beckett actor, Conor Lovett performing some of the finest titles in the Beckett repertoire including The End, First Love, Molloy, Malone Dies and The Unnamable. “A cold, hard jewel of a performance that, if it ever comes your way, is worth dropping everything to encounter.” Fintan O’Toole, Irish Times.

In addition to the inimitable performances by Gare St Lazare Players over the course of the weekend, Gaitkrash announces an exciting collaborative performance event built around Play, another of Beckett’s masterpieces on Friday 16 and Saturday 17 March at 10.30pm in the Half Moon Theatre. Gaitkrash is composed of performers Bernie Cronin and Regina Crowley and the sound artist Mick O’ Shea. For this event they are joined by performer Andy Crook, sound artist Paul Hegarty and artist James Mc Cann. Play is overseen by the celebrated director Philip Zarrilli. Furthermore there will be other performances, events, exhibitions and public lectures including an exhibition of artists books based on the writing of Samuel Beckett running in the Lewis Glucksman Gallery from Thursday 15 through to Sunday 18 March.

There will also be preshow talks, including one prior to The Beckett Trilogy, by Dr. Nicholas Johnson, Trinity College Dublin as part of the weekend’s programming. This weekend offers Irish people a chance to celebrate their Irish-ness by paying homage to one of the finest Irish minds of the 20th Century so this St Patrick’s Weekend, drop everything, get to Cork Opera House and get your Beckettgroove on!
