Hello, we’re casting a short film that is a part of the Think Big program and is funded by O2 and Headstrong in corporation with BeLonG To Youth Services.

Aim of Project/About the Film:

The aim of the project is to promote positive mental health within in the Transgender youth community by raising awareness of it.

The film will show the life/express the feelings off a member of the transgender youth community by showing the audience his life, his dreams and the world around him.

The first half of the film is a dream where everything is perfect and the second half shows just how awful the reality really is.

Stand Up:

Some of you may be aware of the Stand Up Campaign against Homophobic and Transphobic bullying in schools by BeLonG To. This film we’re casting for has been dubbed the “Trans Stand Up”.

Here’s a link to the two Stand Up Campaign videos, to get a feel of the standard of this project though of course we’ll be aiming for much higher! The original stand up is over 950,000 views on YouTube and counting, Ellen DeGeneres even liked it!

2011 Campaign: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lrJxqvalFxM

2012 Interactive Campaign: http://www.standup.ie/

Though we’ve gained our inspiration for this project from the Stand Up campaign this film will have its own individuality and is a separate project. It will be more of a short film as opposed to a viral campaign like it will even be longer in length too.

Payment/Concessions: Though this is an UNPAID position expenses will be fully paid and food, transport etc. will be provided.

Auditions: There are several roles on offer, some bigger than others but all important. Everyone is welcome to come along on the day of auditions.

Date: Tuesday 3rd July

Place: BeLonG To Youth Services, Parliament Street, Dublin 2.

Time: Under 25’s: 3:30pm-6:30pm

Over 25’s: 6:30pm-9:00pm

If you are interested in auditioning you are more them welcome just to show up on the day though if possible let me know in advance so we have a rough idea of numbers.

If you can’t make it during the time frame of your age/if it would suit you better to meet me at a different time/date let me know and you can either come at a different time on the 3rd or we can reschedule for a different day altogether.

If you would like a copy of the script contact me and I will email it to you. You are also welcome to take a look just to decide if you actually want to audition for the film.

You are welcome to audition for a pacific character or just to come along so we can meet you and see where you’d fit into the cast.

For the audition all you need is yourself. If you have an audition piece/monologue already prepared that you’d feel more comfortable doing that’s fine. Otherwise we’ll just run lines from the script with you. If you do come prepared with a piece you want to do yourself if its relevant to the character your auditioning for all the better.

No experience necessary, though preferred.

It’s open to everyone, all shapes and sizes so bring your friends!

Also any actor who does audition but is unsuccessful in receiving a role in the film then they are more than welcome to come along on the days of filming to be an extra.

Though only the thing I will ask is that people who do audition are comfortable with the issues raised in this film but also being associated with them. The film will be circulated to schools, youth groups, film festivals and used as a part of a viral campaign on YouTube.

The premiere will be held during the 4th Transgender Europe Council Conference which is being held in Dublin this year in September, where over 200 Trans activists from across Europe will be attending.

People who identify as any label under the Trans Umbrella are more than welcome to audition for any role.

All roles are listed below.

Commitment:

The film will be shot in the last week of July and there will be some rehearsals beforehand depending on demand and actor availability.

Below is the list of roles available:

Lead Roles

Dylan A

- Gender: Male

- Playing Age: 16-19

- Info: Student, has swag and is epitome of cool. Oozing with confidence. The first half of the film is a dream sequence and this is the dream version of Dylan who is perfect and is everything the real Dylan what’s to be.

Dylan B

- Gender: Female

- Playing Age: 16-19

- Info: Student, shy, angsty. In the middle of coming out as they’re true self and is trying to be who they are but is uncomfortable with the world around them. They are dealing with lack of support from home and being bullied in school. The character is a pre-T Trans guy. However due to the lack of availability of Trans actors (we know this isn’t very PC and we apologise) we are asking female actresses to audition for the role. However anyone who identifies on the male side of the spectrum is more than welcome to addition for this role if they have had no hormone treatment. There won’t be a bias towards an actor weather they are Trans or not but short hair is preferable and must be willing to bind chest and wear guys clothes.

- Gender: Female

- Playing Age: 40-55

Extra’s

Extra’s of all ages will be needed. Come along to the day of auditions as well if you want or just contact me and show up on the day. Lots of secondary school aged students will be particularly needed.

I’ve had back problems for most of my life.  A severe spinal curve has led to hip misallignment, muscular problems, etc.  It makes sitting, standing, or even lying down for longer than a few minutes at a time very uncomfortable, often painful.  After starting at the Gaiety School, where even the vocal work we do is extremely physical, it became clear that I would need to find a way to manage these problems if I wanted to keep up in the course.

The Alexander Technique was recommended to me by one of our lecturers who specializes in movement and body work.  The technique, which was developed in the 1890′s by Frederick Matthias Alexander, is designed to correct bad postural and muscular habits that people develop over the course of their lives.  The original purpose of this technique was to improve performance, confidence, mastery of the body, and relieve tension and stress.  Perfect for an acting student!

The Gaiety School was generous enough to provide me with a course in the Alexander technique, which took place inside the school. The Instructor, Aisling Morgan, a musician from Galway, first sought out the Alexander Technique to address performance related tensions and also migraine headaches. She became a devotee of the Alexander technique after witnessing firsthand how effective it was for performers.

The class consisted of 8 students, including myself, of all different ages and walks of life.  Some, like myself were actors and performers, while some were more interested in correcting muscular habits that had caused them pain and discomfort their whole lives.  We were all able to relate our experiences, and Aisling addressed each of our concerns individually.  She then went into a detailed description of the human body and how the skeleton and muscle structure interact and change over the course of a lifetime.

We were also shown images of the skeletal structure of a small child and how structurally perfect their posture is, which makes their flexibilty and range of motion incredibly wide.  Obstacles such as heavy bookbags, “proper” sitting in school, and other bad habits severly damage our posture and limit our flexibility and range of motion.  I had never realized how damaging something as simple as carrying a heavy backpack around could be, but when shown an X-ray image of a preteen carrying a school bag full of books, I was shocked.  If we could see how our bones contort to support the weights we force it to carry, we would be horrified.

We spent some time on what Aisling called “floor work,” which consisted of lying prone on the floor, with the soles of the feet firmly on the floor and the head resting on a medium-sized paperback book, which Aisling said was more conducive to the natural skeletal placement of the skull than resting it on the floor.  In this position, we were to allow gravity to let our bones “fall back into place,” in other words, to mentally urge them to return to a naturally comfortable position without physically moving.  Aisling came around to each one of us and lightly adjusted our limbs, encouraging us to “let go” and not allow ourselves to try and control our limbs.

It was an extremely informational and enlightening class, which I was very fortunate to attend.  I’m already putting what I learned in the Alexander technique workshop to good use, and I can see (and feel) the difference in my performance!  Thank you Gaiety School!
